Guest Speaker – Freder Chen, UNSW ENACTUS Open Door Learning

Freder Chen introduced UNSW ENACTUS to the Committee. ENACTUS is a global project that focuses on social issues through entrepreneurship and social enterprise.

Freder is the Project Leader of ‘Open Door Learning’ who offer career consultation through lecture-style sessions, one-on-one tutorials and workshops. A component of their program includes professionals from corporate organisations who present on employment and offer workplace tours.

Open Door Learning had completed research and development and are up to the consultation phase and wish to consult with local young people, at the same time offer them support and information on employability skills.

Another ENACTUS project from UNSW is ‘Fortunate Food Co’. The project has a few aspects including food safety, resume support, financial and marketing skills.

Both groups are seeking to work and consult with local young people. Individual YAC members agreed to work with ENCTUS on their projects and keep the Committee updated on projects progress.

Youth Week 2017 debrief

Culturefest and Outdoor Cinema

A new model was implemented for this year’s Youth Week event. On Friday 31st March, the first day of Youth Week, from 4.00pm to 6.00pm a youth volunteer event along with live music and activities were held at Heffron Park, Maroubra. Activities from 6.00pm to 9.00pm included bush tucker and an outdoor screening of the film ‘Zoolander’. Wet and windy weather made set up difficult causing the tent setup to be delayed.

The committee acknowledged that the 2 security guards were friendly and pro-active, and were pleased to see the presence of the 2 Police Youth Liaison Officers from the Eastern Beaches Area Command.

Crowd numbers were slow to begin with but gradually built up over time to a good number creating a busy and active vibe at the festival.

The committee did an excellent job engaging with young people at their stall. There was a minor issue regarding noise from the stall during performances but was quickly taken care of.  Tania Krasinski reminded the committee that any issues should be referred to her immediately for her action.

The committee wished to acknowledge the presence of Mayor D’Souza and Councillor Shurey and commented that local young people were interested in speak with Councillors. It was a privilege to have had Councillors available, demonstrating that Council acknowledges and respects the role of young people in the community.

The venue was discussed and although Heffron Park was a popular venue that attracted a good crowd, the committee decided that Maroubra Beach has been the best venue for attracting local youth. It was also noted that the poster design for 2017 was outstanding and Facebook advertising was successful.

Action: Adry Awan to draft a letter of appreciation to acknowledge the participation of Mayor D’Souza and Councillor Shurey at the Youth week event, for the committee to discuss at the next meeting.

Events / projects for 2017

The committee proposed that Council considers an event, for Mental Health Month in October 2017, which involves young people in activities and showcases how they can connect with like-minded young people in the area through sport, music, art and other activities.

Action: Tania will draft a proposal to Council.

Meeting closed at 7:30pm
