MM17/17 Surfing NSW - Request for financial assistance for NSW Grommet Surfing Titles......................................................................................................... 1
Mayoral Minute No. MM17/17
Subject: Surfing NSW - Request for financial assistance for NSW Grommet Surfing Titles.
Folder No: F2017/00427
I have received a request from Mr Mark Windon, Chief Executive Officer of Surfing NSW for a funding contribution towards the annual Surfing Contest event that is run by Surfing NSW each year to coincide with Council’s Beach Breaks Carnival and Surfing Walk of Fame induction.
The Surfing Contest that is being planned for 2017 is the NSW Grommet Titles at Maroubra Beach.
Each year Surfing NSW coordinates a Surfing Contest to be held in July on a date to coincide with Council’s Beach Breaks Carnival and Surfing Walk of Fame induction. Holding these events together gives prestige to the Beach Breaks event, promotes the status of Maroubra Beach with over an estimated quarter of a million dollars of additional economic dollars invested into the area. It also capitalises on audience, with over 100 families competing in the Surfing contest who automatically take part in the Beach Breaks Event.
Each year Surfing NSW requests cash sponsorship and in-kind support from Council to hold this event.
The 2017 NSW Titles will be held at Maroubra Beach from 21-23 July 2017. The event aims to bring increased patronage to the area, to showcase Maroubra Beach as a world class surfing beach and promote the area as a tourist destination. Over 100 junior competitors, their families, staff, officials, event sponsors and media will attend each day over the three days of the competition.
Maroubra Beach will be promoted as a family friendly destination for local residents and visitors to the area over the weekend.
Surfing NSW is again seeking funding for this event in 2017, and have requested an ongoing contribution to hold this event.
Financial impact statement
Surfing NSW has requested the following mix of cash and in-kind sponsorship:
Cash Sponsorship $8,250.00
Hire Application Fee $170.00
Beach Hire $1596.00
Additional Lifeguard $3,856.00
Use of Jet Ski $1,729.00
Total Council Contribution $15,601.00
The cash component will contribute towards payment of t-shirts, trophies, stage hire, PA hire and promotion of the three day surf competition.
The in-kind contribution from Randwick City Council’s Aquatic Services will cover the costs of Beach Hire, additional lifeguard and use of jet-ski.
Since the inception of the Maroubra Beach Breaks Carnival in 2013, Council has every year provided funding to support the delivery of this event.
It is recommended that the above funding for this year’s event be covered through the Council’s Contingency Fund. Further, for future years this cost be added to Council’s Donations Budget on a continual annual basis.
It is considered that the three day NSW State Junior Surfing Title is a popular and prestigious surfing contest which will benefit the local area as well as enhance and tie in with Council’s Beach Breaks Carnival and the Australian Surfing Walk of Fame. Awareness of this unique sporting event will provide ongoing benefits to promote Maroubra as a tourist destination, with benefits to the Randwick City business community.
a) Council approve $8,250.00 cash sponsorship and $7,351.00 in-kind support to Surfing NSW for the production of the 2017 Junior State Surfing Title scheduled at Maroubra Beach with funds through the Council’s Contingency Fund;
b) a $16,000.00 donation towards this event be added to the annual donations in future years budget;
c) Surfing NSW be advised to appropriately and prominently acknowledge and promote Council’s contribution to the production of the NSW Surfing Titles;
d) the Mayor or their representative be given the opportunity to present the winners of the Junior Titles Surfing Contest with their trophies on behalf of Council.
