Folder No:                   F2004/07086

Author:                   Joe Ingegneri, Manager Technical Services

Introduction

As a member of Sport NSW, Randwick Council has been presented with an opportunity to support the local Girls Get Active event to be held in June 2017.  The event is offered exclusively to Sport NSW Council members as part of the Stronger Sporting Communities program.

Issues

The Girls Get Active event is organised for local female high school students.  Invitations are distributed to a number of high schools in the local area to attend the event at no cost.  The aim is to encourage young females to participate in sports especially into their late teens.

The day involves a panel discussion involving champion female athletes followed by an active session with 6-8 different sports stations. The aim is for participants to try a variety of sports in a fun and safe environment. Information on female pathways available in the local region is provided for each sport to encourage female involvement in sport.

Sport NSW coordinates the event, invitations, sports, media and guest speakers. The host Council usually assists with a venue, facilities and funding assistance. The local event is proposed for the 7 or 8 June 2017.  UNSW has offered the use of their facilities to cater for 120 female high school students.

Sport NSW is requesting financial support from Randwick Council to offset the following expenses:

·        Catering

·        MC and athlete appearance fee (where applicable)

·        Equipment such as sports hooter, wristbands, sunscreen etc

·        Printing of event posters and programs

·        Bags and items for showbags

·        Event photographer (where applicable)

·        Travel costs for staff and athletes (where applicable)

The usual contribution from the host Council is $2,000.  However, the financial contribution sought from Randwick Council for this event is $1,500 because UNSW has offered their facilities.

Relationship to City Plan

The relationship with the City Plan is as follows:

Outcome 5:       Excellence in recreation and lifestyle opportunities.

Direction 5b:      A range of cultural, sporting and leisure activities.

Financial impact statement

The report outlines a financial contribution of $1,500 for the Girls Get Active event to be held in June 2017.  This contribution will be funded from the existing 2016-17 operational budget.

Conclusion

Randwick Council is a member of Sport NSW and has been requested to support the Girls Get Active event to be held in June 2017.  For this event, Council has been requested to assist by providing a financial contribution of $1,500.

Randwick Council has been a strong supporter of local sporting groups and Sport
