Subject:              Rotary Police Awards - additional sponsorship request

Folder No:                F2013/00087

Author:                     The  Mayor, Cr Noel D'Souza

Introduction

The Eastern Suburbs Rotary Police Officer of the Year Awards recognise outstanding Police Officers in the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command. The Awards represent an opportunity for the local community to acknowledge and reward excellence in policing. The Police Awards are proudly presented by the Rotary Clubs of Maroubra and Randwick with the Police Officer of the Year announced at a gala dinner hosted by the eastern suburbs (Randwick and Maroubra) Rotary Clubs. Members of the public are invited to nominate officers from the Maroubra local area command for the Community nominated Police Officer of the Year Award.

At its meeting on 10 March 2015 Council resolved:

“(Mayor, Cr Seng) that Randwick City Council enters into a sponsorship agreement with Rotary by contributing $4,765.00 to their Rotary Police Awards program. In return the Randwick Council logo will be displayed on promotional material and Council will be acknowledged as a major sponsor on the night at the event to be held on 6 May 2015 at The Lakes Golf Club.”

It should be noted that in the past the Rotary Club of Botany Bay have joined with the Maroubra and Randwick Rotary Clubs to host a joint presentation event. This year the Botany Club will be hosting their own separate function. The Randwick and Maroubra Rotary Clubs will be holding their presentation at the Prince Henry Centre at Little Bay on 11 May 2017. The Bayside Council is not participating in this event this year.

A request has been received from the Randwick and Maroubra Rotary Clubs for additional sponsorship of their Police Awards function due to the price increase for holding this event.

Issues

The original sponsorship amount of $4765.00 paid for 55 Police Officers to attend the Awards Presentation at $85 per person. The cost for the dinner per person is now $110.00. To cover this year’s cost for the awards Council will need to contribute an additional $1285.00 bringing Council’s total contribution to $6,050.00.

In return for their sponsorship amount, Council will be named as a major sponsor on all marketing material and on the website and the Mayor is invited to present the 55 tickets to police officers.

Financial impact statement

A sum of $1,285.00 is the requested additional contribution, with the total sponsorship amount being $6,050.00 which can be funded from the Community Donations budget for 2016-17.

Conclusion

The Police Officer of the Year Awards will allow the best of our local police officers to shine and be acknowledged for their professional excellence and dedication. Sponsorship of the Awards event will also serve to demonstrate the good relationship and excellent partnership that exists between Council with Rotary and the NSW Police.

Recommendation

That Randwick City Council continues the sponsorship agreement with Rotary by contributing $6,050.00 to their Rotary Police Awards program. In return the Randwick Council logo will be displayed on promotional material and Council will be acknowledged as a major sponsor on the night at the event to be held on 11 May 2017 at The Prince Henry Centre at Little Bay.
