Subject:                  Establishment of New Award - Mayor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Randwick Business Community

Folder No:               F2015/00620

Author:                    The Mayor, Ted Seng

Introduction

Randwick’s bi-annual Business Awards night is being held on Wednesday 26 August 2015 providing an opportunity for Council to recognise people making important contributions to the Randwick economy and the broader community.

Issues

Recent articles in the local media highlighted the long-term contributions of two individuals to the Randwick Business Community.

Randwick pharmacist Richard Ho has recently retired after 37 years of providing outstanding customer focused pharmaceutical services to the local community. Additionally, after running the Kingsford Furnishing Centre for 60 years, holocaust survivor John Engelman passed away in February of this year aged 88. Both individuals have made outstanding contributions to the Randwick economy and broader community over many years and are the inspiration for the proposed establishment of a new award, to be presented at the bi-annual Business Awards presentation, being the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Randwick Business Community.

It is proposed that this special award will recognise individuals and acknowledge long-standing businesses who, after a very long (possibly 30+ years) and distinguished career serving their community in business within the Randwick LGA, have now concluded their business career. It is proposed, in addition to recognising these two individuals with awards, that Council funds a table for each award recipient’s families at the Awards dinner.

This award would not necessarily be presented at each Business Awards night (held every two years) but would be reserved for occasions when a long-serving business person was retiring from business.

Financial impact statement

The cost associated with the provision of this special award is $2000.00 which covers the cost of the tickets to the awards presentation and framed certificates. If supported by Council, the funds ($2,000 inclusive of GST) would be funded from the 2015-16 Contingency Fund.

Conclusion

Local businesses are an integral part of the community, providing products and services, employment and economic drive to the local area.  The establishment of this award provides an opportunity for Council to recognise those individuals who, through the operation of their business over a long period of time within the Randwick LGA, have made an outstanding contribution to the local economy and the broader community.

Recommendation

That:

a)     Council establishes a new award for its bi-annual Business Awards night, being the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Randwick Business Community;

b)     the first recipients are Richard Ho and John Engelman;
