Introduction

 

The ‘2011 Future of Local Government: National Summit’ will be held in Melbourne from 29 to 30 June. Given this Summit is scheduled to be held the day after the June Council Meeting, the matter is listed for consideration by the Administration & Finance Committee as urgent business, to allow time for the registration of any interested Councillors.

 

Issues

 

The theme of this Summit is; ‘You can create the future you want’ and is of interest to ‘anyone with an interest in influencing the future of Local Government’.

 

The Summit will specifically address the following topic/discussion areas:

 

-    The future of local government – journey to date

-    It’s all about the community

-    Evolution in community governance: building on what works

-    Localism and Realism

-    Local government should be the most influential lobby group in Australia

-    How important is the performance of local government

-    Transition Towns: creating local sustainable communities

-    The Golden Age for local government is a possibility in the future, but how will ongoing reform be achieved without a clear driver for change

-    Local government service delivery and new community development models

-    Restructuring service delivery/rethinking the public policy process

-    The CEO’s perspective on the future of local government

-    Public engagement and strategic decision-making in local government

-    How can local government be more productive with other levels of government?

-    How do we drive this forward?

 

Relationship to City Plan

 

The relationship with the City Plan is as follows:

 

Outcome 1:       Leadership in sustainability.

Direction 1b:      Council is a leader in the delivery of social, financial and operational activities.

 

Financial impact statement

 

Councillors’ attendance at this conference has been allowed for in the 2011-12 budget.

 

Conclusion

 

It is recommended that interested Councillors be authorised to attend the 2011 Future of Local Government: National Summit.

 

Recommendation

 

That any Councillors interested in attending the 2011 Future of Local Government: National Summit to be held in Melbourne from 29-30 June 2011 advise the General Manager as a matter of urgency for registration purposes.
