Mayoral Minute No. MM78/08

Subject:                  Message From the Outgoing Mayor

Folder No:                   F2007/00001

Author:                   Councillor Notley-Smith, Mayor

Introduction

Since I was a young teenager I have believed that there is no greater honour to be had in our City than to serve as the Mayor of Randwick. The last twelve months have proved to me that this long held belief was correct. It is with the greatest sincerity that I wish to thank my fellow Councillors, Council’s management and their unrivalled 600 professional staff and, of course, the people of the City of Randwick for the opportunity to serve in this position. Without the assistance, counsel and encouragement of all these people I could not have achieved the outcomes which I believe will have a positive and enduring effect on our City. This Mayoral Minute highlights the achievements of Randwick City Council over the last twelve months.

Background

A number of initiatives have been undertaken this year, some of which are firsts for local government in New South Wales. Attached is a list of all the Mayoral Minutes I have put forward, from which an assortment has been included to give insight into the breadth of matters which I considered issues of sufficient importance to address as Mayor.

I am pleased to see that the initiatives involving communicating through SMS and the launch of our new website in July put us at the cutting edge of accessibility. The East Timorese Scholarships, Water Saving Initiatives, Late Hour Entry Declarations at Coogee Pubs, and the Commemoration of the French-Australian alliance in WWI have all been achieved or are on track.

My commitment to infrastructure renewal and the improvement of the public domain is demonstrated by the significant resources allocated in the 2008-09 budget.

Since March 2004, this Council has changed dramatically for the better. The determination of Councillors and staff to reform our Council has paid dividends in improved service standards, innovative management practices and staff morale. It is fitting that such momentous change has been recognised with local, state and international awards for outstanding efforts and results in virtually every part of the organisation.

To have been part of and to have contributed to the myriad changes, some of which are set out in this Mayoral Minute, to how our council performs and fulfils its responsibilities to its residents has been an experience and an education without peer. I have committed myself full-time to this position and attempted to attend to every request made of me. My hope is that Randwick City Council, at the conclusion of my Mayoralty, is closer than ever in living-up to its motto, Semper Prima: Always First.
